The Contents of the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the recollections of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the encounter is detailed in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
His lasting fear associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the series finale to come.
