Slot Maintains He Is Secure and Has Liverpool's Support After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot admitted that it was understandable for concerns to be raised about his position after another convincing defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their 9th defeat in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I've received plenty of backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory obviously but when you're in a managerial role and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He continued, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Conversations with Club Management
When asked to elaborate on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they don't phone me all the time each day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I sense the belief. However I've not talked to them after this match yet so we'll see.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Response
Slot lamented familiar weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, specifically poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the solutions. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don't have to wait to consider it. I’m past being angry inside. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It’s hard because I play for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team enduring a spell such as this with results this poor.”
He concluded, “However we continue to wear that badge on our shirts. And until it is taken away, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to bring this squad back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all once more the values of this club and the reason it's called the best team in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
