Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He contested the legal system and the legal system prevailed.
Two months after being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.
Imminent Jailing
The adjudicated plotter – who has been subject to home confinement in his estate while a number of judicial steps and petitions play out – is widely expected to be jailed in the coming days, amidst growing speculation that he will be sent to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.
Past Remarks on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- paratrooper showed scant compassion for the country's inmates.
“For what reason must we offer those scoundrels a easy time?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, end of story. That's my view.”
At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up there, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or theft.”
Jail Location Discussion
However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week toured the prison in an obvious effort to prevent the high court from sending him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, stated he anticipated the 70-year-old politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive problems – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 election race – implied it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He cannot to cope if they send him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells containing forty detainees: “It's virtually one meter squared per inmate.
“We talked to the prisoners and they grumble, of course, of the horrible food,” remarked the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out before the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.
Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to see “the greatest political injustice in its history”.
“It is an injustice that erodes the hearts of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed Public Reaction
It is possibly true considering the considerable support Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. However his predicted jailing has also pleased the feelings of millions other people who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for plotting to block the elected leader from becoming president – and even plotting to have him murdered.
Reimont Otoni, a politician for the current leader's allied group, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to obtain proper care – but respectful care while incarcerated. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time praising the harsh treatment of convicts, had suddenly realized to their rights. “Just now has the extreme right – which has always asserted that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to learn what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.
“The former president is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, degrading handling”.
Potential Incarceration Conditions
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of detainees, his more likely destination seems to be a adjacent penitentiary for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
Its cells are considerably more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the impressive leader's home, about a short distance away.
As per reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – roughly the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre balcony. “He could be allowed to have a television and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report stated.
Ideological Comments
The lawmaker criticized the talked-about plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his outcome in the {
