Mikel Arteta Warns Fitness Woes Could Undermine The Gunners' Trophy Hunt
Mikel Arteta has voiced fears that his team's pursuit for titles this campaign is being threatened by a concerning circle of injuries and a relentless fixture list.
Fresh Team Update
Key midfielder Declan Rice missed the midweek trip to face Club Brugge due to illness. Meanwhile, forward Leandro Trossard and defender William Saliba remain on the sidelines.
There was, on a brighter note, positive news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian striker registered to their European squad. He replaces the hurt youngster Max Dowman, who picked up an ankle injury.
"Practice, no because we lack time to train. But obviously the fact that you are without players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a truly dangerous cycle."
Dowman's issue is the most recent in a extensive series of fitness problems for the North London side. Since the beginning of last campaign, they have suffered 95 injuries, the second-most total in the Premier League.
Extended Absentees
- Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are not expected to be back until 2025.
- Midfielder Kai Havertz continues to recover from surgery and "needs more time," as stated by the manager.
Arteta rejected the idea that training methods were to blame, pointing to a shortage of time for drills. He emphasized the pressure on fit players, some of whom have played over 150 games in two years.
Recruitment Plans
Even after a significant summer investment exceeding £250 million, Arteta stated the club is not planning to dip into the January transfer market.
"Right now we're just concentrating on bringing the players back and hopefully it will be a question of weeks," he said. "We know how crucial those weeks are going to be."
Next Challenge
The team experienced their initial defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, reducing their lead at the top of the league to two points.
Focus now shifts to the Champions League, where a sixth consecutive group victory would virtually secure a knockout phase finish. Forward Gabriel Martinelli could create history by scoring in a fifth consecutive Champions League match.
"We are frustrated with the outcome, but we have to move forward," Martinelli said. "It's not like all is going badly because we lost one game. So we stick together."
