Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would step back from public duties after Congressional panel released his repeated messages with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who once headed the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.

Email Communications

The newly public messages demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected Summers' choice to resign.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement comes after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on the case.

The measure will then proceed to the administration of the White House for signature. The President has said he plans to approve the bill, after reversing his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel recently included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, Summers stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to maintain communicating with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".

Professional History

The professor served in leadership roles under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that he was ceased to be associated with the group.

He became part of the board of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO the company leader.
