A minimum of 64 people died in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's records.

Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 people were taken into custody.

Security forces deployment
Approximately 2,500 police forces took part in the security action

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, along with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a extended probe.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are frequent in the country prior to important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.

The international environmental meeting the climate conference is scheduled in the northern urban center in late autumn.
