Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the final round with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
